The WONDER Lab is deeply committed to education and mentorship, providing numerous opportunities for learners at all levels to get involved in research:

Medical Students
We welcome medical students (pre-clinical or clinical years) to join our projects, whether through summer research programs or year-long research tracks. Students receive one-on-one mentorship from faculty and senior researchers, assist with data gathering and analysis, and often take ownership of a sub-project leading to abstract presentations or co-authored manuscripts. This is a great way to explore neurosurgery and build research skills early in medical training.
Residents and Fellows
Neurosurgery residents and clinical fellows are integral members of the WONDER Lab. They often spearhead studies related to their subspecialty (e.g., spine, neuro-oncology, vascular) under the guidance of the lab team. We support residents in formulating research questions, performing analyses, and writing manuscripts for publication. Through this process, residents sharpen their research acumen and frequently present at national conferences. Our lab’s culture emphasizes mentorship, helping trainees balance research with clinical duties and fostering the development of academic neurosurgeons.
Interns and Undergraduate Students
For undergraduates or research interns interested in healthcare data, the lab offers structured internships. Interns learn fundamental research skills – from conducting literature reviews to data entry and basic statistical analysis – and contribute to ongoing projects. They benefit from participating in lab meetings and journal clubs, and receive mentorship that can guide career decisions toward medicine, public health, or data science.
